Tom was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. He attended Dowling High School, studied English at the University of Iowa and received his law degree with honors from Drake University Law School in 1988.

Tom has two children. Jim; who is practicing at the firm and Emily; a recent Grandview graduate working as an educator.

When he is not working, Tom enjoys biking, working out, traveling and reading.
